The Dragon Boat Festival
The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese festival celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th month of the lunar calendar. It is a time to commemorate the great poet Qu Yuan and to ward off evil spirits and diseases. The festival is filled with various customs and activities that have been passed down for centuries.
One of the most famous customs of the Dragon Boat Festival is the dragon boat races. These races are held in rivers, lakes, and other bodies of water. The dragon boats are long and narrow, often painted with dragon heads and tails. In each boat, there are rowers, a drummer, and a flag-catcher. The rowers paddle in unison, while the drummer beats a steady rhythm to keep them in sync. The flag-catcher's role is to catch a flag at the end of the race, symbolizing victory.
Another important custom of the Dragon Boat Festival is eating zongzi. Zongzi are sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves. They are usually filled with various ingredients such as meats, beans, and nuts. The process of making zongzi is quite intricate, involving soaking the rice, preparing the fillings, and wrapping them tightly in the leaves. Zongzi can be steamed or boiled, and they are delicious and filling.
In addition to dragon boat races and eating zongzi, people also hang up pouches of herbs and medicinal plants on their doors during the Dragon Boat Festival. These pouches, known as xiong bao, are believed to ward off evil spirits and diseases. People also wear colorful silk threads around their wrists and ankles to protect themselves from harm.
The Dragon Boat Festival is a time for families to come together and celebrate. It is a time to remember the sacrifices of Qu Yuan and to honor the traditions and customs of our ancestors. Whether it is watching dragon boat races, eating delicious zongzi, or hanging up pouches of herbs, the Dragon Boat Festival is a joyful and festive occasion for all.

The Legend of Qu Yuan
The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is celebrated in honor of the great poet Qu Yuan. Qu Yuan was a loyal minister in ancient China who dedicated his life to serving his country. However, he was falsely accused of treason and banished from the kingdom. In despair, he drowned himself in the Miluo River on the 5th day of the 5th month of the lunar calendar.
The people who admired Qu Yuan were devastated by his death. They paddled their boats into the river in an attempt to save him, but it was too late. To prevent the fish from eating Qu Yuan's body, they threw rice dumplings, now known as zongzi, into the water. They also beat drums and splashed the water with their paddles to scare away the fish.
Every year on the anniversary of Qu Yuan's death, the Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated to remember him. Dragon boat races are held to symbolize the people's attempt to save Qu Yuan. The boats are decorated like dragons, as it is believed that dragons are capable of controlling water. The races are not only a sport but also a way to pay tribute to Qu Yuan's loyalty and patriotism.
In addition to the dragon boat races, people also eat zongzi during the Dragon Boat Festival. The triangular shape of the zongzi is said to represent the boat used to search for Qu Yuan's body. The sticky rice inside symbolizes the love and respect the people had for him. Eating zongzi has become an important tradition during this festival.
The Dragon Boat Festival is not only a time to remember Qu Yuan but also a time to ward off evil spirits and diseases. It is believed that evil spirits are more active during the fifth month of the lunar calendar, so people hang up pouches of herbs and medicinal plants on their doors. They also wear colorful silk threads around their wrists and ankles for protection.
The Dragon Boat Festival is a time to honor the past and carry on the traditions of our ancestors. It is a time to remember the sacrifices of Qu Yuan and the values he stood for. By participating in dragon boat races, eating zongzi, and hanging up pouches of herbs, we pay tribute to the legend of Qu Yuan and keep his spirit alive.

Duanwu Festival (端午节, Duānwū Jié) is a traditional Chinese festival held on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese calendar. It is also known as the Double Fifth.[citation(引用;引证) needed] It has since been celebrated, in various ways, in other parts of East Asia as well. In the West, it's commonly known as Dragon Boat Festival.
The exact origins of Duan Wu are unclear, but one traditional view holds that the festival memorializes the Chinese poet Qu Yuan (c. 340 BC-278 BC) of the Warring States Period. He committed suicide by drowning himself in a river because he was disgusted by the corruption of the Chu government. The local people, knowing him to be a good man, decided to throw food into the river to feed the fish so they would not eat Qu's body. They also sat on long, narrow paddle boats called dragon boats, and tried to scare the fish away by the thundering sound of drums aboard the boat and the fierce looking carved dragon head on the boat's prow(船头).
In the early years of the Chinese Republic, Duan Wu was also celebrated as "Poets' Day," due to Qu Yuan's status as China's first poet of personal renown(名声名望).
Today, people eat bamboo-wrapped steamed glutinous(粘的) rice dumplings called zongzi (the food originally intende
d to feed the fish) and race dragon boats in memory of Qu's dramatic death.
