Title: Strategies for Effective Communication
Lesson 4 of the New Concept English introduces the importance of effective communication and provides insights into how to improve this crucial skill. In this article, we will explore some strategies that can help enhance communication effectiveness.
Firstly, it is important to listen actively. Active listening involves giving your full attention to the speaker and making an effort to understand their message. This means avoiding distractions and focusing on the speaker's words, tone, and body language. By being fully present in the conversation, you can better respond and engage, leading to more effective communication.
Secondly, using clear and concise language is key. The text emphasizes the importance of expressing ideas in a simple and straightforward manner. Using jargon or complex language can confuse the listener and hinder effective communication. By using plain language and avoiding unnecessary jargon, you can ensure that your message is understood by a wider audience.
Thirdly, non-verbal communication plays a significant role in effective communication. The text mentions that body language and facial expressions can convey messages as much as words do. Being aware of your own body language and observing others' non-verbal cues can help you better understand and respond to the underlying message being communicated.
Another strategy for effective communication is to ask for clarification when needed. If you do not understand something or need more information, do not hesitate to ask questions. This shows that you are actively engaged in the conversation and are committed to clear understanding. Asking for clarification can also help prevent misunderstandings and ensure that communication is accurate and effective.
Lastly, it is important to be mindful of cultural differences in communication styles. Different cultures have varying norms and expectations when it comes to communication. Being aware of these differences and adapting your communication style accordingly can help you avoid misunderstandings and build stronger connections with people from diverse backgrounds.
In conclusion, effective communication is a vital skill that can be improved through various strategies. By actively listening, using clear language, being conscious of non-verbal cues, asking for clarification, and being mindful of cultural differences, we can enhance our communication effectiveness. By continuously working on our communication skills, we can build stronger relationships, excel in the workplace, and succeed in various aspects of our lives.

How did Vera discover she had this gift of second sight?
Several cases have been reported in Russia recently of people who can read and detect colours with their fingers, and even see through solid doors and walls. One case concerns an eleven-year-old schoolgirl, Vera Petrova, who has normal vision but who can also perceive things with different parts of her skin, and through solid walls. This ability was first noticed by her father. One day she came into his office and happened to put her hands on the door of a locked safe. Suddenly she asked her father why he kept so many old newspapers locked away there, and even described the way they were done up in bundles.
Vera's curious talent was brought to the notice of a scientific research institute in the town of Ulyanovsk, near where she lives, and in April she was given a series of tests by a special commission of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federal Republic. During these tests she was able to read a newspaper through an opaque screen and, stranger still, by moving her elbow over a child's game of Lotto she was able to describe the figures and colours printed on it; and, in another instance, wearin
g stockings and slippers, to make out with her foot the outlines and colours of a picture hidden under a carpet. Other experiments showed that her knees and shoulders had a similar sensitivity. During all these tests Vera was blindfold; and, indeed, except when blindfold she lacked the ability to perceive things with her skin. It was also found that although she could perceive things with her fingers this ability ceased the moment her hands were wet.New words and expressions
